Description

Greater Widths and Weight Capacity
The picture above shows the three standard widths of the Ascender line of Medical Specialty Seating. The widths are measured from the inside of the arm rests; i.e. they are the dimensions of the seat cushions. They measure 20, 24, and 28 inches (the @Home chair comes in 20 and 24 inches only). These widths correspond to 300, 500, and 1,000 pound weight capacities. A standard door frame measures 36 inches. Thus all of our products, including the widest, will fit through any standard doorframe.

Retractable Footrest
The Retractable Footrest is one of the primary features of our acute care chairs, and is protected under a US Patent. It acts as a convenient footrest, but its true value is in assisting the ‘Sit to Stand’ maneuver. By partially extending the footrest the task of entering a 25 or 23 inch high seat is made considerably easier and safer. The same is true when exiting the chair. Click here to view a short film clip that demonstrates the proper ‘Sit to Stand’ technique.

Back Adjustment
With the exception of the Ascender @Home Chair, all of our products come with adjustable backs. There are four back positions covering a range of approximately 90 to 70 degrees. The back is easily positioned by pulling the spring loaded catches out of their holes, moving the chair forward our back, and inserting the catches into the holes corresponding to the desired back position. A set of rubber stoppers is provided as a fail safe mechanism in the very unlikely event that one of the catches fails. An Extended Headrest can be added to the back to better support the neck and head.

Leg Support Attachment
The Ascender line is designed to help treat a wide variety of medical-surgical problems from head to foot. The Leg Support Attachment addresses problems at the lower extremities. It can be attached to either side of the chair (or two supports can be used for bi-lateral conditions), and the range of positions, both towards and away from the chair as well as up and down, is nearly limitless. This option is suitable for post surgical knee replacement, amputations, wound dressing changes, or any condition that can benefit from elevating the lower extremity. The term ‘Ultra’ designates that the chair includes a Leg Support Attachment.

Extended Headrest
The Extended Headrest adds significant support for the head and neck. It is designed to accommodate both the thick and thin cushions (recall that you can swap the seat cushions to adjust for patients’ heights) by simply flipping the thick section over the backrest. The cradle design helps to minimize side to side flopping of the head.

Slant Seat Option
By flipping a lever on the side of the chair, the seat pan is placed in a 10 degree forward slope (the @Home model has a three position slant seat range of 0, 5, and 10 degrees). This option has two primary uses. First, it provides a significant margin of safety for the newly implanted hip. In combination with the adjustable back, hip angles close to 70 degrees are achievable. Second, for people who must sit in a chair for long periods, adjusting the seat pan and backrest will help prevent the lower back from becoming stiff.
